One of the hardest things to do after a blissful holiday is to get your head wrapped around the concept of ‘real life’ again. It was a bit scary how quickly I adapted to no internet, no set schedule, and a life that didn’t require shoes. Safe to say that by the end of our stay at the Octopus Resort on Waya Island in Fiji, I was pretty reluctant to check my emails and get back to the daily grind. Once I was back, though, I admit it was pretty nice to curl up in my own bed, pick up Willie and Finn from the kennel, and stare dreamily into my closet at all of the options that were once again at my disposal (real life certainly has her perks). I guess it’s true what they say – there’s no place like home.
I was, of course, immediately plunged back into craziness, with a lecture to give the day after I got back and students requiring my immediate attention. I had time to take exactly one sip of coffee (yes, I counted) before the first knock on my office door. I also found myself faced with the all-too familiar Procrastination To Do List – you know, the one that sort of endlessly grows right before a trip, full of the things that you’ll get to “once you get back,” which always feels blissfully far away. Now that I’m back, however, those items are squinting at me, knowing they were the victim of holiday procrastination but triumphant that they can be ignored no longer.
One of the biggest items on my personal To Do list is to get back to a regular blogging schedule, which has been a bit patchy due to all of this travel. I scheduled a few posts while I was away, but quickly lost track of days and times and didn’t really check in on my corner of the interwebs all that much. Though I missed you guys, I have to say it was pretty nice to go (mostly) off the grid and soak up the isolation for a little while.
Everyone in our group went through the initial period of tech-withdrawal once we discovered how unreliable the wifi was, but pretty quickly succumbed to the joy that not being plugged in can bring and left our phones back in our rooms in favor of the colorful reef calling our name. It’s one of those rare moments that makes you realize how chained we all can get to those beeping instant gratification devices, and I was really happy to let it all go and take in a stunning sunset without the benefit of an Instagram filter.
And now, back to reality, kicking and screaming all the way of course. My personal weapon against the predictable holiday-induced dragging of the feet is a cute pair of heels and a hand painted vintage skirt (which comes complete with the occasional twirl). But, I still indulge myself in a daydream or three of sunset walks and little more to do than laughing with friends and wondering what the next day in paradise will bring.
What’s your weapon of choice for curing the emotional hangover that always follows the perfect vacation? A gal could use some tips…
xoxo
