Black Magic

Black Magic - The Dressed Aesthetic

Sometimes, a gal needs to pull out all of the stops and be a bit bewitching. Especially on a Friday when the fanciest frocks come out to play. As you know, I am a huge fan of color and am a veritable rainbow the majority of the time. Just this morning, I was an explosion of pastels. But, there’s something about having the perfect black dress in your wardrobe – it can be a bit of a game changer. And this one – a 1950’s liquid satin, with her delicate and stitched appliqué and covered buttons frolicking up each arm – has most definitely cast a spell over me.

This past Monday was Mr. Dressapp’s birthday. Because it fell on a school night, we opted to wait to have our celebratory dinner tonight (although we reclaimed our 20’s and went to see They Might Be Giants at the Astor Theatre on Monday – I can’t remember the last time I was out until midnight on a Monday – am I showing my age or what??) But, tonight we’re donning our vintage finest and heading out to paint the town red. Or black as the case may be…

Here’s the thing about the LBD – it’s a classic for a reason. You can keep it simple and stay black and elegant, introduce a pop color (to which I am addicted), or take a leaf out of Chanel’s style books and contrast black against white. Regardless of your mood, a vintage LBD is the perfect canvas upon which to paint your evening’s perfect picture.

So, with a pop of red and the swoosh of a crinoline, we’re darting off into the glittery night. I think we can both use a touch of celebration – it has not been the easiest week overall and we could use an evening to remind ourselves of all of the amazing things to be grateful for. And of our inner strength with which we can survive anything. Though it may seem sometimes that life (and these heels, for that matter) is unspeakably unstable, without a hope in the world of finding its center of gravity, when you turn your attention to the things that matter most – family, friends, the husband you curl up to every night and awake to smiling each morning, and perhaps a bit of magic –  it becomes perfectly clear that you are never going to stumble without someone there to catch you.

I’ve guess it’s not really about walking on stable ground – that never happens. It’s all about finding your balance.
