Is there anything better than the phrase “Two for the price of one”? Not in my world, particularly when it pertains to vintage dresses (and probably coffee. Also shoes. OH! Anything sparkly!). But, when it comes to dresses doing double duty, an automatic two-for-the-price-of-one deal includes reversible garments, matching skirt and top sets, and this beauty – which is a fitted wiggle dress and a sheer, separate organza overlay for twice the vintage fun. (I kind of feel like a Doublemint commercial saying that…)
I remember reading Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem years and years ago and was always captured by this idea of a ‘Dream Within a Dream’ and an inability to distinguish between fact and fantasy. We’ve all had them – Dreaming about awaking from sleep, believing we were back on solid ground but finding we were still in the firm grips of slumber. Being chased and waking in relief to find the chase continues in yet another dream. I think the most unsettling (and frustrating) feeling in the world is waking when you realize in a dream you had solved a problem or come up with the perfect answer…only to feel it slipping away as consciousness takes over, like water trickling through your fingers. I’ve solved many a crisis in dream form only to find them ready and waiting and unsolved for me in the morning.
And this double-layered dress within a dress epitomizes a dream within a dream for me, where the bottom layer is the original slumber, further clouded by the gauzy green reverie of uncertain wakefulness….
All that we see or seem
is but a dream within a dream.
~ Edgar Allen Poe ~
Most of the time, the things we figure out in a dream are probably little more than gibberish, but I always find myself snuggling back into the pillow, trying to hold onto those moments, those answers…because things – whether it’s a chicken who speaks, the ability to fly, or a visit from two people that have magically morphed into one – always seem to be acceptable without question in a dream. I don’t even bat an eyelash. Perhaps that’s why so many of us long to live in fantasy – because even the craziest parts of ourselves make sense.
Being on cold meds for the last week or so has definitely had me walking around in a bit of a daze. (Note to self: Don’t try to write papers while on cold medication. Nothing good can come from it.) But, I’m slowly starting to feel like my old self again. I finally went to the doctor yesterday in desperate need of pharmaceuticals to kick this thing once and for all. Now, armed with antibiotics and a Can Do attitude, I’m starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s funny how, when you’re sick, it’s almost impossible to remember what it felt like to be well. And there’s usually this amazing euphoria when you start to emerge from the cloudiness of illness – as if you never knew how amazing it could be to be able to breath through your nose and swallow without wincing. Maybe we need to be sick every now and again, if for nothing else than to remind us of how downright blissful it is to be well.
So, wishing you all a healthy week and restful sleep. Had any sweet dreams lately?
xoxo
