Phew, what an amazing first quarter of the year this has been! I swear, I blinked the day after Christmas and suddenly found myself in April. Now, April is one of the best times of year in my world. Firstly, it’s when the weather here in NC stops being fickle and turns plain lovely. Secondly, it’s the final month of the semester – all of us Professors have a bit more bounce in our step, as the end of the madness is in sight!
This has been a particularly crazy semester – with so many students, committees, papers, grants, conferences…the list goes on and on! But, it’s so exciting to see the lab take shape and start to feel on top of things (rather than the Headless Chicken look I was sporting this time last year). In the midst of the craziness, I was also pretty pleased to see some awesome vintage make it’s way onto these cyber pages.
So, in honor of the first good chunk of the year gone, here are some of my favorite looks from the past few months!
It’s pretty amazing the kind of dichotomous buzz of energy floating around campus at the moment. On one hand, you have the graduating seniors. They’re simultaneously excited and terrified. You can see them ready to stretch their wings and become fully fledged adults, on to new adventures. But they’re nervous to take the leap, unsure of what waits for them outside of the protective university walls.
And we’ve been flooded with tours for potential freshmen. Pint-sized, wide-eyed humans, just as eager to break free of home and claim their independence as those on their way out. But at the same time, afraid of leaving home, with reliable home cooked meals and a washing machine that doesn’t require quarters. I remember both of those moments so clearly. I used to get a burst of pride walking the streets of Boston – jubilant that I had made it and was in college. But, you’d better believe I cried when my mom dropped me off and helped me lug that last box inside. And leaving for grad school in New Zealand was amazing. But, yet again I can remember sitting in an empty dorm room with my best friend, wondering why everything had to change in order for me to grow up.
Now that I’m a professor, I can say without reservation: bring on the end of the semester!!! Let’s lock this down and get this done. Because for once in a very, very (very) long time, I see no huge change on the horizon. No big moves. No new jobs or new countries. Just blissful, sun-kissed summer freedom.
Yeah…kind of can’t come fast enough….
xoxo
