In all of my planning, one event that I forgot to pack for was Halloween. In rummaging through my (woefully abbreviated) closet this weekend, there wasn’t a cat ear headband or a devil’s tail in sight. No fairy wings. No vampire fangs. Even my old standby blue gingham dress with my vintage barn purse for an instant Dorothy costume was packed away, not to be seen for a month or more. Thus, I was pretty much out of luck on the costume front. But, I knew that if I couldn’t fully get into the costumed-Halloween spirit, at least I could embrace autumn with both arms.
This was the second of two recent purchases from San Diego favorite The Girl Can’t Help It (the first was this amazing Pat Premo beauty). In addition to knowing that every time I see a corseted vintage dress I must pounce, there is just something about an orange floral print. It calls for me to light pumpkin spice candles and drink a cup of hot apple cider. It speaks to a chill in the air, as jack o’lanterns line the porch and a zest lines my spirit.
It’s been a bit of a strange shift of seasons for my body to adapt to. In the Southern Hemisphere, we’d left just at the tail end of winter. Fully expecting to do a perfect 180 and rejoin winter again on this end, I was pleasantly surprised to find the weather in North Carolina to be sunny and beautiful. It’s kind of the best of both worlds – where I can ease the autumn colors out of the closet, but still get to wear sundresses and sandals and sip a cold beer on the porch, marveling at my new surroundings.
We’re keeping Halloween pretty low key this year – we didn’t have much time to decorate, but we’re excited to hand out candy to the ridiculously adorable neighborhood kids tonight. Since it’s been over 5 years since we were able to participate in trick or treating, I plan to have the best candy on the block.
In unrelated news, I bought a car! If you follow my Instagram, you’ll know it’s a 2017 Toyota Corolla iM (yes. it’s a car from the future). I have been a die-hard Toyota girl my whole life. Given our fresh start in the States, I decided it was an opportunity to see what else was out there and broaden my horizons. Turns out, my original horizons needed no broadening and knew me well. After a thorough search and an exhaustive series of test drives, I found myself right back where I began, ready to sign on the dotted line. And I couldn’t be happier. It’s nice when life starts to resemble functional again…
So, Happy Halloween everyone! I hope you have a bewitching day.
xoxo
