{Review} Sweet Tooth: Introducing Sock Candy - The Dressed Aesthetic

As clearly evidenced by my love of appliqué, I’ve always been drawn to 3D elements in clothing. Features that hint at worlds hidden in the layer of a garment. Embroidery, appliqué, solids on sheers. It’s probably why I seek out tromp l’oeil prints and love layering – it creates parts of an outfit that stand in sharp relief to the backdrop of the day.

Similarly, I am absolutely smitten with sheer socks and stockings that boast some sort of design – which gives the illusion that a pattern has decided to dance upon your ankles by some happy accident. So, you can imagine my delight when I happened upon the brand Sock Candy, which dresses your feet in whimsy.

If you’ve never heard of them before, Sock Candy is a (you guessed it) sock brand that celebrates the unconventional. Applauds the unapologetically exuberant. One look at their website, and you’ll see they are bursting with color and vibrance. Every pair is packed with personality. Their tagline reads, “For Your Inner Maximalist.” Clearly these socks were always meant to meet my feet. It was just a matter of time. So when Mary Gui reached out to me to see if my toes needed a bit of a boost, I was more than a little excited to give their socks a try…

Sock Candy designs their sock to be worn with sandals, so you can really let your styling creativity flow. Although my mind started whirring with styling possibilities for pretty much every pair on their site, I opted to twirl in the Cherry Blossom Sheer Crew Socks and Ribbon Roses Sheer Ankle Socks. You know your girl has a thing for florals….

Cherry Blossoms Sheer Crew Socks

The first pair I took for a spin was the sheer crew socks in Cherry Blossom. As someone who swoons over florals, these looked so romantic to me when I first spied them on their website. And when they arrived (packaged beautifully I might add), they did not disappoint.

They’re made of 54% nylon, 45% combed cotton, and 1% lycra, and were super soft to the touch. They come in one size that’s recommended to fit anywhere from US 5.5-9.5. I admit I was a little nervous at first, because my feet are on the larger side of the range (I need wide platforms to hold up my Amazonian-ness). But, these socks had terrific stretch and fitted my size US 9’s comfortably.

I can tell a lot of thought and care went into the design…from the print placement, to the materials, to the thoughtful stitching at the footbed. Anyone else absolutely hate bulky seams at the toe? (Clearly a residual from my childhood – but that used to drive me crazy). I’m not even sure what name to give them, but both pairs I got from Sock Candy have micro seams at the top of the toe (not the front) and darts at the side. It perfectly sculpts around your toes, minus any uncomfortable seams. Genius.

We also need to talk about the print. In addition to reminding me of the Sakura Storm, they are also a border print (I mean, who knew border print socks even existed?? Be still my heart…). They boast clusters of cherry blossoms climbing delicately up the ankle against a sheer nylon base, with a shower of petals cascading towards the toe. I mean, these are just dreamy. I had fun with the styling, and can see all sorts of possibilities. I love being able to mix prints with them, like I did with this favorite pink and mint speckled 1950’s dress I got years and years ago from La Belle Vintage, but am also already envisioning a monotone look where these get to be the star…

Ribbon Roses Sheer Ankle Socks

The next pair to grace my ankles were the Ribbon Roses Sheer ankle socks – just like the Cherry Blossoms, these were so  soft and incredibly luxurious. They slipped on easily and had the same amazing invisible toe seam (I kind of wish I could send a pair to 5 year old me who screamed the house down when her sock seam wasn’t perfectly parallel to her toes. My poor mom….).

Just as high quality, the Ribbon Roses are also made of 54% nylon, 45% combed cotton, 1% lycra with a 200 needle count. I slipped ’em on and they hugged my feet perfectly. Made of a mix of pink, red, and turquoise roses, topped with a turquoise cuff, the colors are so bright and vibrant and they simply exude happiness. Where the Cherry Blossoms are soft and romantic, these are loud and electric.

This style is a little bit shorter than the crew socks and pairs perfectly with Mary Janes. I loved that I could pull out any color from them to style with, and once again got my print mixing game face on with this look, channeling Dorothy post-technicolor plunge into Oz.

The Cherry Blossom sheer crew socks and the Ribbon Roses sheer ankle socks retail for $18 each (one size fits most) – both of which are available from the Sock Candy website. They also have a sale section if you want to snag yourself a bargain and offer 10% off your first order by joining their newsletter.

If these particular prints don’t call to you the way they called to me, they also have some other amazing designs – including the Stripe Ruffle crew socks and the Polka Dot Ruffle ankle socks that I’ve got my eye on. Their designs are bold, whimsical, and not intended to let your ankles blend into the background. This definitely is a company that celebrates a woman’s individuality and I can tell these socks and my feet are going to have a long, happy relationship.

Sock Candy ships worldwide and offers free U.S. standard shipping on all orders over $25 (basically two pairs ship free!). They also have the cutest packaging and even slip in some delicious taffy for you to snack on while you’re admiring what happens south of your ankles when you slip these on.

If you are vibing on these as much as I am, you can also keep up with Sock Candy on Facebook and Instagram to stay ahead of sales and see new collections as they are released.

Now, my feet and I are off. These socks were made for walkin’….
