Sun Showers

Sun Showers - The Dressed Aesthetic

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about living in Wilmington, April is alllll about the rain. This town was definitely paying attention during that whole “April showers bring May flowers” lecture in school, and they embrace it to the full extent of the weather. And while the sky is falling and the yard slowly becomes sodden, I stare and sigh in contempt, waiting for the sun to peak through the clouds once again. Rain is not a friend to the vintage…

Truthfully, I’m just a happier person when the sun is out. When there are streaks of sun coming through my window, I’m more cheerful, more motivated. I tick off my To Do list like a crazy person and merrily skip towards even the most dreaded tasks. It’s as if the Vitamin D has infiltrated my brain and convinced me to join a Happiness Cult.

Now, before you think I’ve gone off to the happy land where straight jackets and padded rooms abound, there is a fair amount of science behind this. I’ve done a bit of digging, and sunlight can increase the amount of neurotransmitters like serotonin and decrease the release of others like melatonin in our brain. I won’t go all neuroscience Prof on you here, but let’s just think of serotonin as being the type of chemical to host a feel-good party in your brain. They’ve got free shoes and pizza and vintage are inviting you to join in the fun. On the other hand, melatonin is the nosy neighbor who likes to go to bed early and calls the cops when the party gets too loud. Yeah, I know which one I’d rather hang with…

Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations.
I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead.

Since we’re on the topic of neuroscience, as you read this, I am teaching my second to last neuro class of the semester! Whether or not there is sunshine in the sky, there is sunshine in my SOUL. I’m very ready for the semester to end and for the pace to slow. I miss having the time to think about science, rather than simply racing between tasks, never feeling like I’m accomplishing anything well.

And although I am overjoyed to see the sun peeking through more and more, the only downside is my favorite vintage felt circle skirts will need to be tucked away for another season. Time to make room for sundresses and sandals. Summer nights and sun drenched strolls. So, I had to take this beauty out for one last twirl. Because she more than deserves her day in the sun.

Till we meet again in September, sweet vintage….

xoxo
