Some dresses feel like Christmas morning and Mardis Gras and my birthday presents all wrapped up into one. And then in certain other dresses, I AM the present. This beauty from SwaneeGRACE Vintage, with her border print of puffy bows hinting at secrets within, manages to be both at the same time.
What is it about presents? I know we all love to get something new (that’s a given – I mean, hello sparkly?). But I always find sometimes the part just before you open a gift is just as exciting as when you finally get to clap eyes on its contents. When you’re holding a perfectly wrapped parcel, it could be anything. And that moment of possibility is something I love to savor…
Similarly, my favorite moment of gift-giving is still that anticipation. Just before they slip off the bow and catch their first glimpse of what they’ve been given. That precise point where their expression shifts from excitement to joy. From anticipation to reality. I pride myself on being a champion gift giver and love to search far and wide for the perfect gift. And my reward for all of that work is always the look on their face when they open something they never in a million years would have expected.
Although this dress was one I gifted to myself, I still felt that all too familiar feverish excitement just before I opened the envelope. Even though I knew the contents within (and drooled over photos before I could get my hot little hands on her), I just couldn’t help but feel that same frission of What Might Be. And then I tore into it with glee and found she was even more lovely in person than I could have ever imagined.
Speaking of gifts, it’s Friday! That’s a gift unto itself. The week is about to yell, ‘That’s a wrap, people!” and pack it in. And that feeling of an impending weekend is oddly similar to a big, beautiful present set before me. Though we don’t have anything in particular planned (with the exception of being on a one-woman mission to find Mr. Dressed the perfect present, as our wedding anniversary is rapidly approaching), there is that familiar feeling of possibility. As though I may slip the bow off of the weekend and find something inside I never expected…
