I can’t lie – sometimes I derive power from my clothes. They give off a definite vibe and imbue me with a certain sass. For no reason other than it’s the place my whacky mind goes sometimes, there was something about the color scheme of today’s outfit that took me to Wonder Woman. I think we can all admit, that’s not a bad frame of mind to be in when charging into the fray.
Now, some might think Ms. WW might object to the tiny flowers appliquéd on the bodice or the extra layer of poof I added to the skirt, convinced the level of badassery required to defeat yet another supervillian does NOT involve blue daisies, but I have a feeling she’d respect my unique arsenal of fashion weaponry and may offer her Amazon bracelets or Lasso of Truth for additional styling options. Just as the accessories belonging to the Woman of Wonder herself, I can’t help but imagine that these details carry with them their own superpowers….
I‘m doing my best to channel superpowers of late, as there are many layers of stress built into this career I love so much. One of the biggest pieces of uncertainty in science always revolves around funding – at any given time we are either applying for, waiting for, or feeling depressed/elated about the outcome of a given funding round. I am waiting (oh so patiently, as you’ve probably guessed) on a fairly large grant which we won’t hear about until the end of the year. Trying not to think about a string of ‘what ifs’ is like trying to ignore the big pink shark swimming through the room.
Waiting for the next grant and the next year of survival can seem pretty daunting, but I’m not sure that any job (or anything in life, really) offers perfect stability. I had a friend once lament my career, saying how she could never live without feeling confident in her profession and seeing the future. I could definitely understand that perspective, but then sat and listened to her complain about her current job and how there was so much tension in her workplace due to impending layoffs. I suppose when it really gets down to it, we are all challenged to put faith in an uncertain future. And I’m kind of okay with that. Because walking right beside great uncertainty, smiling a secret smile, is great possibility.
So, whatever you’re out there battling today (and we all have something), rest assured you have the strength to get through this. You CAN conquer it. And when it doubt, take a leaf out of Wonder Woman’s book and wear a tiara – you just never know when you might need a projectile…
