Ever hear the phrase, “If you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain”? Never has this been more true than the strange world we currently find ourselves in. Between important protests worldwide, quarantine, murder hornets, and sandstorms, the world feels like it’s experiencing some important long-overdue changes, coupled with apocalyptic catastrophe. I feel we are somehow both barreling forward and standing completely still. I guess this is the very definition of the rain before the rainbow….
I wish I could say there were blue skies overhead, but we’re experiencing rain and gloom as much from the weather as the current political climate. My only weapon to lift my spirits is in dressing as joyfully as humanly possible. Case in point, this perfect trompe l’oeil dress of dreams, who found her way to me courtesy of a vintage trade with the lovely Lea. While she may be a striking black and white print on the outside, this 1950’s baby is bursting with a soul of rainbow colors. She’s had an adventure or two, but I kind of prefer my vintage with a bit of an arched eyebrow and a few scandalous secrets…
I have finally been given directives for teaching for the fall semester. I can only imagine how hard upper admin has been working to try to juggle student needs, faculty and staff needs, and financial stability in the midst of a pandemic, to produce about 184 different instruction options, ranging from face to face (with social distancing) to fully online. And my two classes are (drumroll please)…..online only! Golf claps…..
Truthfully, I am a bit bummed that I don’t get to interact with my students as I normally would in the fall. I am a much more effective educator face to face and know my students learn better when we can talk and discuss difficult concepts in real time. I’ve done theatre since I was a kid and believe me when I say I perform when I teach. High energy, crinolines blazing. But, stepping back from the Want part of the equation to the Need, this is the far safer option. The necessary option. My classes are large and my students and I need to stay safe. So, I am hunkering down for a full curriculum overhaul these next few weeks as I try to get excited about Neurobiology online, with another 5 months of getting very acquainted with my dining room table. Sigh. The rain continues….
I guess on the positive side – expect a LOT of new sewing projects to come from this to help mitigate the stress and stir-craziness. Maybe a whole new wardrobe is going to be the rainbow at the end of all of this rain?
Stay safe, friends…
xoxo
