At the start of summer, when months of warm nights and the freedom that comes from a lack of teaching stretch before you, you can’t imagine that autumn will soon be upon you. One day languishes into another – and you find yourself leaving work early, kicking off your shoes for a walk on the beach before dinner. Ice cold glasses of wine are pressed into your hand and things get put off until tomorrow.
And every year, I am shocked when August discovers me. It’s like walking around a corner, intent on a trip to the coffee machine, only to walk smack into someone you didn’t expect to be there. And it gets awkward real fast. You never thought you’d see August again. At least not for a very long time. But there he is, wide eyed and staring at you. And you have no choice but to accept there’s no escape. The time has come to have the conversation you dread. That summer is almost over.
So why the dread? Well, I need to be honest here – I tend to set invisible stations for myself. As in, “I won’t worry about that lecture, that paper, that experiment until August.” Well, hello there August. Sigh. Yep, now it’s time to worry….
Our semester starts in just a few short weeks – and now that August has me in her icy (smoldering?) grip, I realize that things can be delayed no more. But, I’m bound and determined to make the most of the time I have left. Starting with this amazing top made by the endlessly talented New Again Vintage – I found a small piece of this incredible 1950’s vintage umbrella fabric from a lovely woman on FB, and asked Carolyn if she would be able to make this crop top (from Butterick 9015). And when it arrived, it just sang of summer. Of beach parties and sand in your shoes. Of those lazy, hazy crazy days I’m not ready to let go of yet.
So, although hatches are being battened and the hum of activity is starting to buzz around campus, I see a few more ice cold glasses of wine and evening beach strolls in my future. And when I’m in the thick of it all in a few short weeks, buried in grading exams and student demands, I just have to look at this adorable top, winking at me from my wardrobe, reminding me that summer and I will meet again.
In the meantime, who’s up for a beach party this weekend??
xoxo
