Frills & Thrills

There’s nothing that makes my heartbeat quicken with quite as much commitment as the word Tulle. Tulle dresses, tulle skirts, tulle trim… Floaty and feminine, speaking to sun drenched fantasy and candlelit dinners and twirling around a twinkling ballroom. Also speaking to, you know, Fridays. Cause I haven’t met a Friday yet that didn’t require a bit of whimsy…

I‘ve found that there are certain days that need the kind of kickstart that tulle alone can bring. And tulle that has pink sating binding trim and mini rosettes that perfectly match the blush hand beading on a mint condition 1950’s cardigan?? It literally doesn’t get any better in my world. I also find tulle skirts to be incredibly versatile – I’ve worn this one as a petticoat under dresses, as a skirt on it’s own like today’s ensemble (with a slip underneath), and if I’m feeling very cheeky, as a sheer overlay on top of a printed dress. I’m nothing if not inventive when it comes to having my clothing work overtime…

Life is always better with a closet full of tulle, frills, and glitter

Unfortunately, it’s not all frills and thrills at the lab today. If you’re similarly working in science, then you are well aware of the fact that publishing papers is our currency. I have too many papers to count at the moment that are in various stages of completeness, but somehow my efforts to work on them keep getting thwarted by my hard-working students requiring assistance, admin tasks, collaborations, and admittedly my own procrastination – most of which are very worthwhile distractions (I’m working on the procrastination part).

So today, fueled by tulle and caffeine, I will be sequestering myself to try to make some progress on writing. I plan to spend the afternoon making progress on at least two papers and, when inspiration fails, I’ll look down at the intricate beading on this stunning cardigan and remind myself that great things sometimes take patience in order for them to come to fruition.

Any projects you’re hoping to make progress on before the week runs out?

xoxo
