Things have certainly been pretty busy of late. And whenever this time of year rolls around, my eye can’t help but cast to some sort of greener pasture. Be it next week once that paper has been submitted or that deadline has been met. Next month, once the semester has passed and there are no longer undergraduates flooding my inbox. Or next year, when we might see the end of this long line of bone chilling weariness at the state of the world.
There somehow always manages to be a new station to reach, a new time that always seems better. And no matter how much I know to file these under “Lies I Tell Myself” I can’t help but hold onto the belief that things will be better When. That there is some magic future place, where flowers bloom and grass is ever green, just waiting for me to make it there.
While it’s highly unlikely I’ll ever take my own advice, it’s becoming so important to live in the here and now. To recognize things we may have wanted or needed several years ago or strategies we may have used to get those things have changed. And while an eye on the future is important (those 401k’s sure aren’t going to build themselves), it’s critical to acknowledge we will never be less busy, less distracted, less anything, unless we actively make a change to do less and stop casting an eye towards some mythical tomorrow that, let’s face it, we will never truly reach.
Truthfully, this has been a tough year for a lot of reasons. The world seems doomed to repeat patterns again and again that we never seem to learn from. And I’ve been spending some time off of these cyber pages to do some processing and reflecting. On ways I might be able to create change…and also acknowledging some ways that I have changed over the last year, 5 years, 10 years. So, just a heads up, there may be some changes coming around the bend for us here at The Dressed Aesthetic.
Where the grass looks just right for the future I want to build upon it.
xoxo
