Mellow Yellow

Mellow Yellow - The Dressed Aesthetic

When I was little, my mom lived to dress me in blue – probably because it matched my eyes. And each Christmas, unwrapping would always reveal blue garments for me and red for my sister (she can really rock red). You might think I’d rebel when I got older and abhor blue. But, to this day if someone asks me what my favorite color is, “blue” always comes out.

Turns out, my mom knows a thing or two. Cool tones just suit me. I’m drawn towards silver jewelry and blue-red lipstick and ocean-themed anything. If you were to ask me what color dominates my wardrobe, I would automatically say blue. Or possibly even red (cause I love that pop color). But, a quick glance around my closet this morning (which is organized in ROY G BIV to help me find things), proved that there is an overwhelming amount of yellow. True, there’s a fair bit of blue, but there is a whole lot of sunshine peeking through the novelty prints and tulle confections.

I truly don’t think I will ever acquire enough yellow. I don’t know what it is, but something just pulls at my heartstrings when I see a yellow dress and I simply have to buy it. I can honestly say I had no willpower when I spotted this latest Marjorie Montgomery stunner. In addition to my irrational need to find every piece MM ever created (natch), yellow just calls to me. To me, it’s the color of sunshine dancing on your cheeks and the happiness that fills a room without having to say as word.

Truthfully, this is the time in the semester where we ask start dragging our feet – where exhaustion sets in and you start dreaming of summery sunshine so much you start to dress like it in the hopes that it might make it arrive faster. And while I never want to be one of those people who wills time to speed up, because I know there will inevitably be a time where I want more than all the world for it to go slowly, I am definitely ready for the chance to breathe deeply and drown in a bit of golden-hued freedom.

I guess for now, if I can’t have summer…at least I can dress like summer?
