Muses

Muses - The Dressed Aesthetic

We all pull inspiration from a variety of sources and for a variety of reasons – either an outfit that you spied while walking down the street who’s vibe you want to emulate, to a perfect pristine flower bursting from the rosebush, to someone’s approach towards life – we all have our muses. The things you can point to that inspired a new part of yourself to come into being.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Zeus and Mnemosyne had 9 daughters. These 9 Muses are said to preside over the arts and sciences, each with their own pet project. From the Goddess of Music to the Goddess of Poetry and the Goddess of Tragedy, each chaired an art to give other artists the necessary inspiration for creation.

I am definitely ever-hunting for new inspiration. While my projects these days are home bound, I’ve been pulling inspiration from everywhere: from bees buzzing around our backyard, to koi ponds on our daily walks, to favorite works of art. And lest my creativity ever dry up, this amazing vintage novelty print, covered in what looks like those elusive Muses, ready and willing to infuse the creative arts back into my soul, might be just the extra insurance policy I need to keep the inspiration close…

For me, art and science have never been very far from each other. Despite the whole left brain/right brain myth (which, yes, ladies and gents…is a myth), I have always found my science to be made better when I reserve a place and time in the week for creating art. I feel very strongly that it’s the main thing that has pulled me through an entire year of isolation.

With a nod to those 9 muses, I can see myself calling to Terpsichore for a bit of a push in the direction towards recording that children’s album that’s been on our bucket list forever…or appealing to Calliope to keep my hands steadily working on the circle skirt ideas that simply won’t stay in my head (I consider my skirts to be the thing of epic poetry). I’ve been asking Thalia to keep me laughing while I try to keep my motivation up for the endless scientific To Do list, trying not to surrender to the fact that most days I feel like, for all of the 40 things I finished, there are 40 more that I wasn’t able to get to.

Inspiration is all around us, the Muses just at our fingertips, waiting to be called.

Where are you finding your inspiration lately?

xoxo
