To Those Who Wait

To Those Who Wait - The Dressed Aesthetic

As a society, I generally don’t think we’re all that good at waiting. It hasn’t always been this way. I’m going to sound like one of those walking-barefoot-uphill-in-the-snow type of old ladies, but back in the days, pre-technology, I had to wait for a lot of things. Letters to arrive in the mail. A trip to the mall for a new pair of shoes. The latest episode of my favorite show. I used to be able to wait in line with nothing but my thoughts to entertain me. Nowadays, we can send off emails with lightning speed, grab a new pair of heels with the click of a mouse, and binge-stream entire seasons. I can’t sit still for one second in line for coffee without needing the instant gratification of checking IG or Facebook, stabbing at my phone like a lab rat. No, we’re not so good at waiting these days….

However, every vintage collector knows that this business is ALL about the patience. Since most of us don’t have an unlimited income or the ability to scrape every vintage sellers feed every second of the day, we often miss out on coveted pieces. I’m a second too slow, it’s out of my price range, or it would barely fit my big toe, let alone the rest of me. Take this most stunning Koret of California set – it slipped out of my grasp so many times. I would see it in my feed, but with a bright SOLD sticker splayed across it. 2nd, 3rd, or 20th in line,  but no dice. More than once, I could practically feel the fabric graze my fingers. So close, but so far away…

There’s an old saying, “Good things come to those who wait.” For anyone from my generation, that can either be interpreted as a meaningful proverb or a clever marketing tag line by Guinness in the 1990’s. But, regardless of whether it conjures up sentiment or stout, it is never more true than in the world of vintage.

At long last, after years of waiting, the stars finally aligned for me to make this beauty mine. I spotted her in a teaser post at Old Friends Vintage, and nearly had a heart attack. Poised and ready, I was not going to miss out on this piece again. Thankfully, with my thumbs working feverishly over DM, I managed to emerge victorious, with this piece of vintage perfection now nestled safely in my closet. I guess good things really do come to those who wait. Or at least good things come to those with lightning fast reflexes and the ability to hit refresh like a madwoman….

Speaking of waiting patiently, the winter chill has finally made it to Wilmington! We’ve had a bit of weather-related Tourettes, bouncing between the low 30’s and the high 60’s for weeks. While some people bemoan the cold, I have to admit I love a bit of a nip in the air that inspires me to snuggle on the coach and sip cocoa. More importantly, it also means all of my favorite coats can come out to play – including this latest acquisition from British Retro.

I’ve only recently discovered this brand, but can tell I’m going to be a die-hard fan. They’re a boutique British-made retailer, which means they generally only produce small quantities of each piece. This coat is impeccably made, and definitely brings in a bit of luxury to the every day. I had to wait for her to make her merry way to me all the way from England, but who isn’t willing to wait for a bit of luxury?

Now, what shall we wait for next…
