A Rose By Any Other Name

A Rose By Any Other Name - The Dressed Aesthetic

I don’t know about the rest of you, but days have certainly lost all meaning. I wake up and it takes a good 5 minutes to even know what day it is. It’s funny to think about this same time last year. The buds were just starting to break into flowers. The end of the semester was in sight, with thoughts of summertime looming. Nowadays, I’ve got lots of buds blooming in my sewing room, but not a lot of places to wear them. The end of the semester can’t come fast enough, but mostly because I’m exhausted at feeling inept. Same season, very different feeling.

I guess it’s no surprise that I find myself reaching for the brightest, most cheerful pieces I can find in my wardrobe (when I do surrender the loungewear, that is). Although it’s safe to say I’m not a gal who ever goes for neutrals, now more than ever I’m craving the joy of color. Of vibrancy. Of perfect border prints and endless beds of roses. To remind me that there is a bright, colorful light at the end of this tunnel. And if there was ever a dress to inspire hope, it’s this rose-printed beauty I got years ago from Butch Wax Vintage

Do not watch the petals
fall from the rose with sadness;
know that, like life,
things sometimes must fade,
before they can bloom again.Anonymous

Because we have time for such things nowadays, I was reading up a bit on roses. Apparently, they can bloom on and off year round, mostly bursting into life between Spring and Fall. Here in NC, we generally can see roses coming into their own starting in late Spring – this is just about the time of year I would start to plan trips to the Arboretum or Airlie Gardens to see the first flush of color. There’s nothing I like better than matching my outfit to my surroundings.

While relegated to my backyard for outfit photos (much to my neighbors’ amusement), it got me thinking a lot about our current predicament. How important it is to have a period of dormancy, of rest. Protecting those around us, while giving us time to reflect within the soil, before we’re ready to burst forth into color again.

And although it’s safe to say this time is anything but restful for any of us (this Flower Girl is busier than she ever thought possible), we have to go into hiding for a bit so that we might bloom again in the spring. And give silent thanks to those who continue to bloom – hospital workers, postal workers, the amazing people working curbside delivery for a range of businesses – despite how hard it is to do so. I’m so thankful for being given this time to say safe and tight inside the bud.

Here’s to a bloom that will be brighter and more colorful than ever before.

xoxo
