Candy Buttons

Candy Buttons - The Dressed Aesthetic

When I was younger I was obsessed with candy buttons. You know what I mean – the dots of candy stuck to the long strip of paper, in a stream of rainbow colors. You would systematically go row by row, peeling them off with your teeth and convincing yourself they had different flavors. In truth, they basically amounted to little more than sugar and cornstarch, and you always ended up eating more of the paper than the actual candy…

The minute I saw this dress at Emerson Maeve Vintage, I instantly went back to those candied strips. Summer trips to the penny candy store, 50 cents jingling in my pocket. I saw the carefree feeling of days that stretched on forever and ice cream dripping down my wrist, my knees sticking to the back of the car seat as we went off on another adventure. And that’s what clothing can do – evoke a feeling. Bring up a memory. Bring you instantly back to who you are and where you came from.

Speaking of where you came from, this week Mr. Dressed and I have taken to the skies and landed in sunny San Diego! We’re here to celebrate his parent’s 50th wedding anniversary with the revelry it deserves. To celebrate the importance of love and the power of longevity. As Mr. D and I come up on nearly 10 years, I realize how lucky I am to have someone to look forward to the next 40 with. Paving the way for a colorful future.

So I could see no better way to burst back into one of my home cities to celebrate love than in a flurry of color. Even more so as it’s National Pride month, because it’s so important to clearly stand next to the LGBTQ community. However small, wearing our buttons of support by busting out our very best rainbow colors shows we celebrate the diversity that exists in gender identity and sexual orientation. That we celebrate a community that is so often persecuted and the victim of discrimination and violence, simply for who they love. And openly showing that we see the color that our differences bring to the world.

Because love is love is love.
