Criss x Cross

Criss x Cross - The Dressed Aesthetic

More often than not these days, I’m taking a bit of a hybrid approach to my dressing (and no, I’m not just talking about pairing a cute top that can be seen in my Zoom meetings with some snazzy pajama bottoms). We’re at that magical time of year when Mother Nature is refusing to commit to one temperature, criss-crossing between rain and drizzle and dazzling sun. Truth be told, this is my favorite time of year, because all of my velvet and felt Juli Lynne Charlot circle skirts can come out to play.

I think we can all do with a bit of duality now and then – summer blending into autumn, old meets new, inky black with a splash of color. And maybe it’s only in the pairing of two opposites do we really learn to appreciate the beauty of both. The power in stark contrast. In learning from the past, but ever moving forward.

Speaking of learning from the past, I am always in awe of the appliqué techniques by the Queen of the Poodle Skirt. It seriously doesn’t matter how many circle skirts I make or how proud I am of the outcome, when I zip up a true JLC there is simply nothing like her artistry. In the perfection of the lines, the precision of the individual elements, a perfect blend of math meets art. There’s also just a different feeling I get from wearing something that has a history. Of stories passed criss-crossing and co-mingling with my present, where I get to forget for a moment where her history stops and I began.

I wonder if someday, when I pass on my creations to my niece or they end up as vintage themselves, locked in a dusty cedar chest and unearthed from the depths of a forgotten closet by a discerning vintage seller, if her new owner will zip her up and feel a bit of my history. Will she recognize the gentle sigh of my day to day interwoven into the fibers. If she’ll be able to feel my dogged persistence, fueled by caffeine and a furrowed brow. If she could sense the scientific way I approach every project, crossed with all the times I just had to shrug and go for it. If she appreciates my restraint, coupled with a mad desperate desire to fall into a big pile of glitter and color and joy.

Maybe if she looks hard enough at the space where all of the things intersect, she will find me there.

xoxo
