Into My Web

Into My Web - The Dressed Aesthetic

I have a dark secret to share with you, which is likely to be a very unpopular opinion, particularly in the vintage community. Trust me when I say this confession has raised many an eyebrow and the gasp is often heard around the world. There are memes about my truth. It’s resulted in a bar brawl here and there and I’ve lost friends over it. You may decide to stop reading my blog altogether once you hear my terrible secret. Brace yourself people….

I’m really not that into Halloween.

I know. I KNOW. This sad truth of mine is rarely met with anything other than shock. Most people love Halloween. Deep, unabashed love. My feed starts to fill with spooky thematic outfits and unbridled anticipation the minute the calendar clicks over to October 1. But (and this is the deep dark secret part), my whole being groans a little when I know it’s coming.

But the truth is….I’ve never been a fan of anything scary. I hate horror movies (probably more than I hate anything in this world). Things jumping out at me is pretty much my version of purgatory. I don’t get any sort of thrill from haunted houses and am completely spider-averse. And before you jump in with a but (I can hear the next counter-argument that comes at me every time I confess my secret), here’s another shocker: I’m actually not all that into candy. It’s true. I’ve never really had a sweet tooth and am the girl who is satisfied by eating two M&M’s. So, even the sugar rush angle to Halloween doesn’t do it for me.

There you have it. Proceed to depart these cyber pages en masse….

When witches go riding,
and black cats are seen,
the moon laughs and whispers,
‘tis near Halloween.

Despite my aversion to the Holiday, I am nothing if not a glass half full kind of gal and have found pieces of it that I can take a little joy in. I can get onboard with the whole dressing up thing (naturally) and do find the neighborhood kids in their costumes to be pretty cute. Jack-o-lanterns are all right in my book and I am the only person I know who actually owns jars and jars of brains. So, maybe there’s a bit of Halloween in me yet.

And I must to admit, as much as I avoid the polyester strung spiderwebs and the horror-movie marathons that seem to abound this time of year, I definitely walked trancelike into the web of this most perfect hand-painted circle skirt from Pickled Vintage, festooned with butterflies similarly entranced by her gold gilded arms. And here I may stay forever, fluttering my wings. Suspended in space and time. And I’m not all that upset about it.

May we all find our own version of spooky. Happy Halloween all!

xoxo
