Lepidoptera - The Dressed Aesthetic

My husband and I have a rule around the holidays – we need to avoid buying things for ourselves from December 1. Reason being, we don’t want to run the risk of doubling up (which has only almost happened once with a handbag I got myself). I’m (mostly) pretty good about following this rule, except in rare cases with a vintage piece that stops my heart. So, come December 1, I lustfully drool over many glittery things in shop windows, but try to remain true to The Rule.

Given it’s the coldest time of the year, I’ve been drawn to coats – which come out by the truckload around Christmas. Full skirted swing coats, luscious princess coats, fur-trimmed capes. I spied this baby pink fit and flare Hell Bunny Hermione coat. From her nipped waist to her wide collar studded with flocked black butterflies, I was smitten. But, ever virtuous, I didn’t add her to my closet. I didn’t even mention her to anyone or add her to my Christmas Lust List.

But, lo and behold, when we were Skyping with my mom to open our gifts together this year, there, nestled in soft tissue paper and wrapped with care, was this coat. And as I buttoned her up and twirled around, I was reminded one again that the things that are meant to be, will be.

As soon as I put my arms into this coat, styling thoughts started swirling. I knew there was no other way than to go full on Lepidopterrific – she was meant to be paired with this most perfect butterfly print dress from Geronimo Vintage and these amazing winged shoes I snagged awhile back in the Sophia Webster sale (clearly I have no problems dressing in themes).

Things have been certainly been taking flight this semester – while January dragged, February already seems to be gaining speed, as if it’s ready for the winter chill to end too (I can certainly sympathize). Believe it or not, our kitchen remodel has come to an end, and there’s a chance we may actually get to live in our house as normal people do this weekend! As much as I’ve appreciated the flurry of activity in the house, ticking off tasks and layering on coats of paint, I am so ready for a morning where I can sleep in past 7am, without a thin layer of drywall dust coating everything.

Needless to say, this butterfly gal is ready to settle on a branch, curl up, and experience a reverse metamorphosis. A weekend in a cocoon sounds mighty lovely right now….
