Pink Panther

Pink Panther - The Dressed Aesthetic

There are few things in life that incite emotion more quickly than music. And it doesn’t even have to involve any words at all. The very best theme songs or movie scores are gripping specifically because there are no words. Think about the dread the iconic two tones from Jaws evokes. The uplifting feeling of adventure from Indiana Jones. And you say “Pink Panther” to just about anyone from my generation and you’ll be treated to a chorus of, “Badum. Badum. Badum-dabdum. Badum-dabdum. baduuuuuuuuum!”

My memories about Pink Panther are solely cartoon-based (I never saw the original 1960’s British film, featuring the bumbling Detective Clouseau and thievery of a famous pink diamond). I don’t think I could describe a single episode to you today. But, I remember the feeling of that music. The cheekiness and sass. A tiptoeing feline. Only a few notes have to play and I will find myself ducking into alleyways and peeking around doorjambs, on the lookout for clues to a mystery yet to be solved. I wonder if we all have our childhoods locked away inside of us, just waiting for a few notes to bring it out….

Much like music, vintage has the magic ability to instantly evoke an emotion. Whether it’s the memory of where I first wore it, or the story of the woman who wore it before me, I swear there are music notes hidden in her folds. I was lucky enough to snag this beautiful vintage pink color block dress from Sweet Life Vintage (she may look familiar as I also have her golden sister!). And I slipped her on and felt her past, ready to add a stanza or two of my own to her story.

It’s going to be a pretty busy week in the life of my own story – I’ve got a few students heading into the field, have multiple outreach events to organize talks for, and am working hard to try to get words on a page and add a bit of science magic to turn them into a grant proposal. It’s weeks like this that make you long for the days when all you had to worry about was Saturday morning cartoons, if you would be allowed to ride your bike in the dentist’s parking lot tonight, and whether a fuchsia toned cat would save the day yet again…

Badum. Badum. Badum-dabdum, Badum-dabdum, baduuuuuuuuum!!!

xoxo
