Urban Jungle

Urban Jungle - The Dressed Aesthetic

There is no time that you miss the city quite like during a global pandemic. It started small: a twinge, a mild craving for the bright lights. It grew to invading my thoughts, with taxi cabs and bustling streets dancing before my eyes. And, much like when you tell yourself not to think of pink elephants, suddenly Pepto-Bismol tinted pachyderms are the only things stampeding through your brain: I need me some bright lights, big city!

Before all of this fantastic isolation, Mr. D and I were planning an amazing weekend in New York. I’m a huge Broadway fan, a huge fine dining fan, and love the pulse and fashion of a place like NYC. I went through weeks of lists of all of the shows I wanted to see, narrowing it down to three because just how much can you fit into a 3 day trip? (honestly? If he would have let me…I would have squeezed in a fourth matinee). But, just as we were ready to pull the trigger and attack the urban jungle: COVID.

Yeah…. so instead, we’re a city of 2.

You have to leave the city
of your comfort
and go into the wilderness
of your intuition.
What you’ll discover
will be wonderful.
What you’ll discover
is yourself.

Well, even if I can’t make the NY City streets my runway at the moment, there’s no rule that I can’t create my own urban jungle right in the backyard. But, take a Broadway HD subscription, some new fancy recipes to master, and a twirly skirt from Mill Street Vintage, I might almost (almost) imagine the city is at my fingertips. True, it’s more suburban than city, more town than taxicab, more neighborhood diner than Nobu, but I am nothing if not the gal who hunts for the silver lining.

Speaking of silver linings: my semester is officially over! Grades were submitted and complaints were addressed, and I suddenly got to step over the magical threshold into winter break. While there isn’t much of a break in my future (grants to write, spring classes to prep), there is a sort of renaissance that comes from the promise of a new year. I know I, like many of us, am ready to leave 2020 behind and reclaim my city. Reclaim my sanity. While I don’t think anything will really be “normal” again, I am definitely ready for a change of pace. Some new surroundings.

Because what I really miss…is not the city. But the people.
