Back in a time long long ago, in a world far far away where we could go outside and stand next to people, I remember dashing through the supermarket one afternoon. I think I was grabbing a few things on my way back to the lab, without thinking too much about who was around me other than beelining for the essentials and getting back to work.
I was swishing around an aisle with my normal vigor when I saw a little girl…maybe five or six, pull on her mom’s pant leg and whisper something to her. Given my procilivity for glitter, I definitely get a lot of little girl’s pointing and whispering. But this one, more bold than most, ducked out behind her mother’s leg and said, “Your dress is pretty.” And then after I smiled, thanked her, and was walking away, she said in a whisper, almost so quiet I’m not sure I heard it, “Are you in a fairy tale?”
Thinking back, I actually think she asked, “Are you a fairy tale?”
I turned back to her, a laugh bubbling up at what might be the best compliment I had ever received. She gave me a tiny wave and she and her mom turned towards the next aisle. And as I watched her walk away, I looked down as my full skirt, so much a part of me that I barely even realize it’s there, and saw myself through a little girl’s eyes.
So today, I decided to be a fairy tale…
I guess when it comes down to it, I kind of have a penchant for dressing in a way that only seems realistic for storybook characters. Full skirts and swooshy crinolines, as if little birds helped me to slip on my heels and woodland creatures sang a sweet harmony as I dashed through the forest towards my second coffee of the day.
I there was ever a dress fit for a fairy tale, this custom made creation by Mr. Lucero would absolutely be it. Almost too beautiful to even exist outside of technicolor, I feel as if I might burst into song, slay a dragon or two, and climb to the top of the tallest tower, all in the same breath. From a breathtaking print to the appliquéd rosebud climbing up my shoulder, I feel pretty ready to slay….
Fairy tales are more than true:
not because they tell us
that dragons exist,
but because they tell us
that dragons can be beaten.
G.K. Chesterton
So, to that little girl from over a year ago now: You are probably much more grown up since the last time I saw you. You may already be turning into the person you are becoming. You probably don’t even remember the crazy lady in the full skirt trying to look for that very specific flavor of kombucha, while simultaneously checking her email to ensure no shark brain crisis had occurred in the 2.5 minutes it took to walk though the parking lot.
But I remember you. With your scuffed pink sneakers and rainbow barrettes, and pockets full of what I hope were potions and spells and glitter. I remember once being you a long long time ago and looking around to see all that I worried I would never become. But, I hope you take your time. And I hope, wherever you are…you are finding your own fairy tale. Taking down Evil Queens with a withering stare. Having adventures and refusing to wait for a Prince to come and save you.
Because, sweet little friend who I never even got to meet: you are the fairy tale. Now go and slay….
xoxo
