Remix

In this day and age, I think it’s pretty important to make the most out of our wardrobes. If the pandemic has taught me anything, it’s how quickly our “normal” can switch on a dime…and how much less I truly need. Over the last year, I’ve been making a concerted effort to resist the temptation to acquire. Of course, buying vintage doesn’t come with quite the same footprint as buying new, but I still have noticed a small voice that got a lot louder this year telling me to slow down and appreciate the things that I have.

With that mission definitely comes a fun challenge of remixing items already in my wardrobe. I know we all have a boatload of separates hiding in all corners of our closets, so I decided to pull a few out and work my styling magic, to see if I couldn’t create something completely new. A few weeks ago, I shared an amazing rosebud embroidered skirt from Xtabay Vintage, which was part of a 1950’s vintage set I was lucky enough to snag (what was that about acquiring less? Yeah well…..)

But, with a flick of a shoe and a dash of a handbag, I buttoned the blouse and straightened my skirts, and a whole new outfit was born….

Speaking of remixing, I know I can’t be the only one who’s days are taking on a lather, rinse, repeat kind of mentality. The ingredients are all mixed and matched, which might seem like a new outfit to the casual observer. But, the day to day feels like one chaotic deadline to the next where I almost can distinguish between tasks. I think we are at the tipping point in the semester, and all I can hope for is that we start to barrel towards the finish line.

Truthfully, it feels a bit weird to be saying farewell to March. The month where It All Began. Where we went into lockdown and everything had to change. But maybe, much like a well worn outfit that you look at in a different light and restyle, I can work to see the positives. The virtual tenure talk my family could zoom into. The number of new tools I’ve learned to make lectures more accessible to my students. The fearlessness I’ve gained with my sewing (light at the end of the covid tunnel in sight or not, the universe isn’t getting the one back). Maybe we just need a mental remix to see that it hasn’t been all bad.

But man…I am so ready for it to be over.

How are you restyling things lately?

xoxo
