Black, White & Read All Over

Black, White & Read All Over - The Dressed Aesthetic

I’ve always been a bit of a bookworm. Ever since I was a kid, I couldn’t get enough books to read and would devour them in a few hours. It was something to help me keep up with my ever-buzzing mind or my place to escape to when the bullying got to be too tough. There were pages full of adventure. A world beyond my own. When I got older and would travel, my backpack would be laden with at least 5+ books by the time I got home, as I’d need to scoop up a new one in every airport. Nowadays, thanks to my trusty iPad, I’m able to travel a little lighter. But the insatiable hunger for the written work never seems to be abated.

I remember when I was young one of my very favorite jokes (which I found hilarious), was the classic, “What’s black, white and read all over?” Most people would, of course, think I was saying “red all over” and would have no idea what it could be, with the exception of a scrawny kid in my class who would say “A zebra falling down the stairs!” (gross). After a minute or two of watching people struggle to come up with the answer, I would triumphantly crow – a book! And crack up at my own cleverness…

Although the scrawny kid on the playground would make every effort to ruin my joke, I have to admit there are few color combos more classic than black, white, and red. The minute I spied this vintage novelty print beauty at Sweet Life Vintage, with an amazing graphic B&W harlequin print, dotted with red ladybugs, I knew I was a goner. Like a good book, it’s easy to get lost in the details of this dress, luxuriating in the stories hidden in her folds.

Reading for fun is definitely a luxury these days. But, as of yesterday, grades have officially been submitted (faculty of the world rejoice!!!!) and the other responsibilities like graduation, end of semester faculty meetings, and thesis defenses are now over. Embracing my newfound freedom, I’m taking a bit of time to do the kinds of things I never had time to do mid-semester: sip coffee on the deck, read a book for fun, put my laptop away and spend the day planning summertime adventures.

If you have any good book suggestions, send ’em my way….

xoxo
