Time Warp

Time Warp - The Dressed Aesthetic

When I was a teenager, one of my favorite movies to watch with friends was Rocky Horror Picture Show – it was silly and weird and just on the right side of scandalous. Huge fans of musical theatre, my best friends and I knew all the words by heart and would unabashedly belt them out while zipping to the mall to wander around and buy literally nothing. Our favorite song was the Time Warp (no originality there. But we were 15…).

I‘m sure we all feel a bit as if we’re doing the Time Warp these days – time seems to both move forward but stand still, swirling us into a Groundhog-Day time oblivion. I’ve been able to occupy myself and my mind through work and sewing like a crazy banshee woman who will die if she is separated from her sewing machine. But, as I was falling asleep last night I couldn’t get the Rocky Horror soundtrack out of my head, knowing the next day I would wake to more of the same.

This dress from Cheshire Vintage sort of feels like the vintage embodiment of a Time Warp for me – with the stripes and trompe l’oeil putting you into a trance where you’re not really sure what’s real and what’s illusion.

Yeah, let’s do the Time Warp again….

So, while we’re trekking on this road headed to (seeming) nowhere, with each day blending into the next, the summer literally disappeared without my even realizing it. Next week our fall semester starts, bringing with it a whole new set of crazy. Although there is a proportion of courses heading back face to face, all of mine will be taught fully online. It’s been a new experience for me trying to figure out how to teach virtually these last few months. Wondering if I just put my hands on my hips and make a step to the right, maybe I can figure out my way through the chaos.

I guess I feel like I’m in a Time Warp of sorts – although classes will start and the anticipated buzz of the fall semester is coming from my computer screen, not much is really going to change. I’ll still be in my dining room, straining to feel connected to the world. Hoping to reach through the cyber void to my students, but unsure of when (if?) things will ever go back to a world where face to face interactions don’t send us into a spasm of anxiety. And knowing that, deep down, we just might need to get used to this as our new reality.

Ahhhh dammit (Janet).
